Lake Paranoá
Reservoir Artificial reservoir in Brasília created for urban recreation
Created as Brasília’s reservoir, Lake Paranoá frames waterfront dining and watersports and provides views of landmarks such as the Palácio da Alvorada and the Congresso Nacional.
Lake Paranoá is an artificial reservoir in Brazil’s Federal District created during the construction of Brasília in 1959 to help moderate the local climate and provide recreational waterfront. It forms a major built feature around which much of the capital’s modern architecture and public buildings are sited.
Shoreline uses include government residences, embassies, parks, yacht clubs and major transport crossings; several landmark buildings and bridges face the water. The lake is used for a range of water sports and leisure activities rather than as a primary water supply.
The lake was formed when planners dammed local waterways as part of Brasília’s mid-20th century development and urban design. Since completion it has been integrated into the capital’s civic and recreational landscape.
It lies within the Federal District surrounding the Plano Piloto of Brasília, with much of the city built directly along its shores.
- Creation date and purpose: Created as part of Brasília's construction in 1959, the lake is artificial and was intended to raise local humidity and provide recreational waterfront for the new capital.
- Best viewpoints: Good viewpoints for photos of the lake and the city skyline include the top of the TV tower (Torre de TV) and the pedestrian paths on the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge.
What to See #
- Palácio da Alvorada: Residence of the President of Brazil located on the lake's northern shore, designed as part of Brasília's original plan and facing the water.
- Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge: A cable-stayed road bridge that crosses the lake and has become one of Brasília's most recognisable modern structures.
- Estádio Nacional (Mané Garrincha): A large modern stadium and sports complex sited on the lake's shore, used for national and international events.
How to Get to Lake Paranoá #
Lake Paranoá is an artificial lake inside Brasília (Federal District) and is reached by city roads from across the capital. From Brasília-Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport it is roughly a 10-15 km drive into the central/ lakeside areas of the city (taxi or car); within the city the lakefront is accessible by local buses and taxis and by driving to lakeside neighborhoods such as Lago Sul and the Pontão do Lago Sul. Because the lake sits inside the city, walking short distances from nearby neighborhoods and bus stops will bring you to the shore.
Tips for Visiting Lake Paranoá #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon when winds are light for calmer waters and cleaner photos of Brasília's skyline; the Pontão do Lago Sul complex on the southern shore is the most convenient place to start if you want restaurants or water-sport operators.
- Use Pontão do Lago Sul for boat and paddle access rather than trying to launch from random shore points-it concentrates services and makes parking/equipment rental straightforward.
- If you want a quieter experience, paddle or boat toward the residential Lago Norte shore early in the day before weekend motorboat and jet-ski traffic increases near the central leisure areas.
Best Time to Visit Lake Paranoá #
Visit during Brasília's dry season (May-October) for the most reliable conditions for boating and outdoor recreation.
