Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley, located within and lending its name to Lake Nakuru National Park. It is best known for large congregations of flamingos and diverse waterbirds.

The lake supports dense shorelines of lesser and greater flamingos, sometimes gathering in numbers that form continuous pink bands along the shore. Birdwatchers also find pelicans, cormorants and migrant waterfowl in addition to varied shoreline habitats.

The lake and surrounding park were set aside for wildlife conservation in the 20th century and have been managed to protect both bird populations and resident mammals, with park boundaries adjusted over time to respond to changing land use and water levels.

Lake Nakuru sits in Nakuru County in Kenya’s central Rift Valley, near the town of Nakuru and surrounded by wooded hills and escarpments.

  • Flamingo variability: Concentrations change with water chemistry and levels, so flamingo numbers can vary from thousands to hundreds of thousands at different times.
  • Best viewing times: Best light for photography is early morning and late afternoon when birds and shorelines are most active.

How to Get to Lake Nakuru #

Lake Nakuru National Park is about 160 km northwest of Nairobi; drive on the A104 (Nairobi-Nakuru road) to Nakuru town then follow signs west to the park (approximately 10-20 minutes from Nakuru town center). There are small airstrips for charter flights and en-route buses drop at Nakuru town where local transfers to the park are common.

Tips for Visiting Lake Nakuru #

  • For flamingo viewing, arrive at the park gates early in the morning or late afternoon when winds calm the lake surface and birds gather in dense feeding rafts.
  • Use Nakuru town as a base-many lodges are 5-15 minutes from the park gate and some offer binoculars and local guides.
  • If the lake level looks low, walk the short wooden platforms at the Centre for Birding to get closer to wading birds without disturbing them.

Best Time to Visit Lake Nakuru #

Visit in the dry season for predictable wildlife and the classic flamingo spectacles; check local reports because flamingo numbers fluctuate widely year to year.

Dry season (June-Oct)
June-October · 15-25°C (59-77°F)
Lowest rainfall and best conditions for tracking wildlife around the lake edge; spectacular flamingo congregations in some years.
Wet season (Nov-May)
November-May · 18-28°C (64-82°F)
Bird diversity is high and the surrounding grassland is greener, but heavy rains can raise lake levels and change bird distribution.
