How to Get to Lake Ilopango #
From San Salvador (city center), take the Carretera Litoral/CA-2 or the Carretera a San Salvador-Zaragoza (CA-5) east and connect to the local road around the caldera (approximately 12-20 km depending on the chosen shore). Some sections of the lakeside road are narrow; buses and colectivos serve towns around the lake but hiring a car or boat gives the most flexibility.

- Hire a local operator for a boat trip; informal launch points around the lake will get closer to the fumaroles and shoreline caves than most public piers.
- Avoid the hottest hours for swimming-strong sun and steep drop-offs combine in spots.
