Lake Ilmen

Lake Ilmen is a large, shallow lake in Novgorod Oblast in northwestern Russia, lying just south of the city of Veliky Novgorod. The lake is a central node in a network of rivers and played a long-standing role in regional transportation and trade.

Several rivers flow into and out of the lake; the Volkhov River drains the lake northwards toward Lake Ladoga. The lake’s shallow depths, broad surface and multiple inflowing streams characterise its hydrology and ecology.

Historically the lake and its river connections were integral to medieval Novgorod’s trade routes and settlement patterns, linking inland waterways with the Baltic basin. Today it remains important for local fisheries and regional transport in summer months.

Lake Ilmen occupies a lowland basin in Novgorod Oblast and is bordered by mixed forest and agricultural land; the city of Veliky Novgorod sits on the lake’s northern approaches, providing the main urban access point.
