Lake Houston is a man-made reservoir in Harris County, Texas, northeast of the city of Houston. It was formed in the mid-20th century and serves as a primary municipal water supply for the Houston area.
The lake covers more than 10,000 acres and is used for boating, freshwater fishing and other water recreation; several marinas, boat ramps and shoreline parks provide public access. The nearby Lake Houston Wilderness Park offers trails, camping and picnic areas on the lake’s north side.
The reservoir was created by impounding the San Jacinto River to provide raw water for municipal use and regional water management. Over time the lake area has developed recreational facilities while continuing to function as part of Houston’s water supply system.
Geographically the lake sits northeast of central Houston in eastern Harris County, adjacent to communities such as Kingwood and Humble. It lies within the coastal plain of southeast Texas and is connected to regional road networks for access.
