Lake El Golfete Lake

Lake El Golfete is a long, narrow lake in Guatemala’s Izabal Department that forms part of the Río Dulce waterway connecting Lake Izabal to the lower river and the Caribbean. It is a working waterway used by cargo and passenger boats as well as smaller tourist craft.

The lake’s sheltered channel and surrounding mangrove-lined banks support fishing, boat tours and riverine wildlife observation rather than large beach recreation. Visitors commonly pass through the lake on boat trips between Livingston or the Río Dulce mouth and inland destinations.

El Golfete is located in eastern Guatemala within the Río Dulce system, surrounded by lowland tropical forest and wetlands that transition toward the Caribbean coast and the town of Livingston.
