Lake Abijatta
Lake Shallow saline soda lake in the Rift Valley
An alkaline Rift Valley lake in central Ethiopia and part of Abijatta-Shalla National Park; birdwatchers visit for large flamingo flocks and other waterbirds along the shallow shores.
Lake Abijatta is a saline rift-valley lake in the Oromia region of central Ethiopia and is one of two main lakes in Abijatta-Shalla National Park. The lake lies within the East African Rift and supports extensive shallow saline flats.
The shoreline and shallow waters attract large concentrations of waterbirds, notably flamingos and other waders, and the lake is visually distinctive for its pale, saline flats and algal blooms. Human uses around the lake include salt extraction and pastoral activity on surrounding plains.
The lake and surrounding wetlands have long been recognized for their wildlife values and were incorporated into the national park to protect bird habitats and rift-valley landscapes. Management within the park balances wildlife protection with local resource use.
Geographically the lake sits in the Ethiopian Rift south of the capital highlands, within Oromia Regional State. The area is characterized by broad rift plain landscapes with nearby volcanic features and hot springs.
- Conservation context: Part of the Abijatta-Shalla National Park complex and located within the East African Rift system, making it a saline, shallow rift lake.
- Birdlife: Important habitat for waterbirds, including large numbers of lesser flamingo at times of high algal productivity.
