How to Get to Lacovia#
Lacovia is a rural town in St. Elizabeth Parish best reached by road from Jamaica’s main airports in Montego Bay (MBJ) or Kingston (KIN). There are no passenger trains; travel relies on private transfers, intercity buses and shared route taxis.
Sangster International Airport (MBJ): MBJ (Montego Bay) is the closest major international airport for western Jamaica. Road travel to Lacovia (St. Elizabeth Parish) typically takes about 1.5-2.5 hours by car depending on route and traffic; shared minibuses and private taxis are common alternatives to private car hire.
Norman Manley International Airport (KIN): KIN (Kingston) is farther east; if arriving here expect a 2.5-4+ hour road journey to Lacovia depending on traffic and chosen route. Intercity buses and private transfers operate between Kingston and destinations in St. Elizabeth.
Train: Jamaica does not have regular passenger rail services for intercity travel today; rail is not a practical option.
Bus / Route taxis (coasters): Intercity buses, private shuttle companies and route taxis (locally called ‘coasters’ or ‘taxi cabs’) link Montego Bay, Savanna-la-Mar and other towns with Lacovia. Expect local minibus fares to be inexpensive (short journeys a few hundred JMD) and travel times vary-local legs often take 15-45 minutes depending on origin.
How to Get Around Lacovia#
Expect to rely on road transport in Lacovia-private taxis, shuttles and route taxis are the norm. For comfort and predictable timings use a private transfer or hire a car; local minibuses are the cheapest option for short trips.
- Private car / taxi (JMD 8,000-20,000 (varies widely)) - Hiring a taxi or private transfer from MBJ or KIN is the most direct way to reach Lacovia and gives the most reliable travel time (approximately 1.5-2.5 hours from MBJ). Negotiate fares in advance or book through a reputable operator.
- Intercity bus / shuttle (JMD 700-2,500) - Licensed shuttle operators and bus services run between Montego Bay, Savanna-la-Mar and larger towns-these can be booked in advance or at the bus terminals. They are more comfortable than route taxis for long stretches but timetables vary.
- Route taxis / minibuses (coasters) (JMD 100-400) - The most common local transport; coasters and route taxis stop frequently and are cheap for short hops between towns and nearby districts. They can be crowded and schedules informal-ask locals for the correct boarding points.
- Motorbike taxi / jitney (JMD 100-600) - In rural parts of Jamaica short trips may be done by motorbike taxi or informal ‘jitney’ services. Use caution, agree a price up front and avoid unlicensed operators at night.
- Car hire (JMD 6,000-12,000/day) - Renting a car gives maximum flexibility for exploring St. Elizabeth and reaching Lacovia on your own schedule; roads are generally passable but watch for narrow or uneven sections. International driver’s permit and insurance are recommended.
- Walking - Lacovia itself is small and walkable for getting around town, markets and local shops. Walking between villages is possible but distances and road conditions can make this impractical for longer trips.
