Negril City

Popular Jamaican beach town known for Seven Mile Beach

How to Get to Negril#

Negril is most commonly accessed via Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ), about 1.5-2 hours by road. Jamaica does not have an intercity passenger rail network, so road transfers (private taxi, shuttle, or coach) are the standard ways to reach Negril.

By Air

Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay (MBJ): Sangster (MBJ) is the closest international airport for Negril. Driving time to Negril is typically 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Options from MBJ include private airport transfers or taxis (shared shuttle or private taxi); a private taxi or door‑to‑door transfer commonly costs US$80-140 for a sedan, while shared shuttles and prebooked transfers are often cheaper per person.

Norman Manley International Airport, Kingston (KIN): Kingston’s airport is much further away (around 4-5+ hours’ drive) and is only useful if combining travel with Kingston; flights into KIN are not practical for most Negril visitors because of the long onward road trip.

By Train & Bus

Train: Jamaica has no current intercity passenger rail service suitable for travelers to Negril.

Bus / Coach: Intercity coach operators (notably Knutsford Express) run scheduled services between Montego Bay and Negril. Typical coach travel time is about 1.5-2 hours and fares vary by operator and seat class (expect roughly JMD 1,500-3,000 / US$10-20 one‑way on express services). Local route taxis (minibuses/route taxis) are cheaper but slower and operate on flexible schedules.

How to Get Around Negril#

Road transfers are the norm for reaching and moving around Negril - private transfers or scheduled coach services from Sangster (MBJ) are the most convenient. Once in Negril, walking covers the beach strip well; taxis and rented cars are best for exploring farther afield.

  • Private transfer / taxi (US$80-140) - Private airport transfers booked in advance are the easiest and most reliable way to reach Negril from MBJ - drivers meet you at arrivals and drive direct. Expect roughly US$80-140 for a private sedan; larger vehicles cost more. Useful if you have luggage or arrive late.
  • Shared shuttle / coach (US$10-25) - Shared shuttle services and scheduled coaches (Knutsford Express and other operators) run between Montego Bay and Negril with journey times around 1.5-2 hours. Coaches are comfortable and cheaper than private taxis - fares commonly sit in the US$10-25 range depending on operator and seat.
  • Local minibuses / route taxis (JMD 100-500 (short hops)) - Local minibuses and route taxis are the cheapest option for getting around Westmoreland Parish and between nearby towns, but they can be crowded, have variable departure times, and may stop frequently. Good for short hops once you’re in the area.
  • Car rental (US$40-80/day) - Renting a car gives maximum freedom to explore beaches and nearby attractions (Rick’s Café, Bloody Bay). Roads are generally good but watch for occasional potholes and local driving styles. Expect daily rates from about US$40-80 depending on season and insurance.
  • Taxis within Negril (JMD 300-1500) - Taxis in Negril are plentiful for short trips along Norman Manley Boulevard and to nearby spots; agree a fare before you travel. Short rides are inexpensive compared with airport transfers.
  • Walking - Negril’s main beachfront areas and the West End cliffs are very walkable; many bars, restaurants and beaches are within easy strolling distance from most hotels along the strip.

Shopping in Negril#

Negril has a line of souvenir shops, craft stalls and small boutiques along the main road and beach strip selling batik, rum, spices and tourist gifts. Expect shops geared toward visitors rather than large malls. For specialty items or supermarket shopping, larger towns like Savanna‑la‑Mar or Montego Bay are best.

Live music, casual bars and cliffside sunset shows are the main attractions; there are fewer late‑night clubs than in big cities.
