Laguna Lachuá is a near-circular freshwater lake in the Alta Verapaz department of Guatemala, set within a protected area. It is notable for its clear water and intact surrounding rainforest.
The lake sits in a forested karst depression and offers short boat trips, wildlife viewing and riverside trails through humid forest. Birdwatching and sightings of monkeys, reptiles and freshwater fish are common in the immediate lakeshore zone.
The lake and its surrounding forest were designated a protected area to conserve the site’s biological diversity and watershed; the protected-status management focuses on low-impact visitor access and habitat preservation.
Laguna Lachuá lies in northern Alta Verapaz amid lowland rainforest and karst terrain in central Guatemala. The park is in a relatively remote area of the department, reached by road from regional towns in Alta Verapaz.

How to Get to Lachuá Lake #
Most visitors travel from Cobán (Alta Verapaz). From Cobán, drive about 2-3 hours on rural roads to the park entrance near La Tinta; local guides and boats are arranged at the lakeside. Roads can be rough - a 4x4 is recommended in the rainy season.

- Hire a canoe or small boat from local operators to reach the reed beds and see birdlife up close.
- Early morning is best for birdwatching - quieter water and more activity among kingfishers and herons.
- Ask local fishermen about seasonal water-level changes that affect access to particular bays.
