Kvitøya

Island Remote Arctic island largely ice-covered, part of Svalbard

An ice‑covered island in the far northeast of the Svalbard archipelago, Kvitøya is largely uninhabited and noted for its association with Andrée’s Arctic balloon expedition; visits occur only on specialised polar voyages.

Main image

Kvitøya (White Island) is a remote, mostly glaciated island in the far northeast of the Svalbard archipelago, administered by Norway. The island is notable for its polar history and extreme remoteness.

The island’s coastline is fringed by ice and pack sea, and it supports very limited wildlife habitats compared with other Svalbard islands due to pervasive glaciation. There are no permanent settlements and human visits are rare and typically scientific or historical in purpose.

Kvitøya came to wider attention when the remains and records of S.A. Andrée’s ill-fated 1897 Arctic balloon expedition were discovered on the island in 1930. The island otherwise has seen little human activity and is managed under strict nature reserve rules.

Kvitøya lies east of the main Svalbard islands in the Arctic Ocean and is one of the archipelago’s easternmost landmasses. Sea ice and weather make access highly dependent on seasonal and ice conditions.

  • Protection and access: Part of the Nordaust-Svalbard Nature Reserve and nearly entirely ice-covered, with strict landing restrictions for conservation and safety.
  • Historical discovery: Known as the island where remains and journals from S.A. Andrée's 1897 Arctic balloon expedition were found in 1930, an important polar-historical site.
