Kongsøya Island

Kongsøya is an island in the Kong Karls Land group of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. It is remote and uninhabited and forms part of a cluster of islands used seasonally by large Arctic predators.

The island and surrounding area are noted for their importance to polar bears and other Arctic species; as a result the islands are subject to strict environmental protection and limited access.

Administratively Kongsøya falls under Svalbard governance and the Svalbard Treaty framework; there are no permanent settlements or infrastructure on the island.

Kongsøya lies in eastern Svalbard, well to the east of Spitsbergen, in a high-Arctic marine and pack-ice environment.

• Access restrictions: Access to the group is heavily restricted to protect polar bear denning and other sensitive Arctic wildlife, and landing is generally prohibited for visitors.

Kongsøya (part of Kong Karls Land in Svalbard) is remote and within protected areas. Access is only by boat or helicopter from Longyearbyen on expedition cruises or special scientific/permit trips; landings are often prohibited to protect wildlife. If visiting is permitted you must join a licensed expedition departing Longyearbyen and comply with Svalbard environmental regulations.
