KV4 is an ancient tomb cut into the rock in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor in Upper Egypt. It belongs to the complex of New Kingdom royal tombs used for pharaonic burials and associated activities.
The chamber layout and inscriptions show it dates to the later Ramesside period of the New Kingdom and the tomb was left unfinished and later reused for non-funerary purposes. Excavations and surveys have identified it as part of the valley’s broader program of tomb construction and reuse rather than a completed royal burial site.
KV4 is located on the west bank of the Nile in the Theban necropolis area opposite modern Luxor and sits among the sequence of numbered KV tombs clustered in the valley.

How to Get to KV4 #
KV4 is inside the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank. From central Luxor take a taxi or shared minibus across the Nile (ferries and bridges connect the East and West Banks) to the West Bank entrance roads; the Valley of the Kings is a short drive from the river crossing and from Luxor city center (typically a 10-25 minute drive by car or taxi).
Once at the Valley entrance you walk from the ticket area into the valley to reach tombs including KV4 - expect a short walk of a few hundred metres to reach the tomb entrances.
Tips for Visiting KV4 #
- KV4 (the tomb attributed to Ramesses XI) sits inside the Valley of the Kings but is frequently closed to the public; check availability with the Valley of the Kings ticket office or a licensed Luxor guide before planning a visit.
- Plan your Valley of the Kings visit for first entry when it opens to avoid the midday heat and peak tour groups at the famous tombs; if KV4 is not open, concentrate on nearby tombs and ask staff about occasional special openings.

Best visited in the cool season (October-March) when temperatures are far more comfortable for outdoor sightseeing.
