KV33
Monument Unfinished Valley of the Kings tomb, little-decorated burial
KV33 is a lesser-known New Kingdom tomb in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor; visitors interested in Egyptology come to view burial architecture and learn about ongoing conservation and excavations.
KV33 is a rock-cut tomb in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes (modern Luxor), part of the Theban necropolis used during Egypt’s New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 BCE).
The tomb is one of many small, often undecorated or lightly decorated shafts and chambers carved into the limestone of the valley; interiors are generally compact rather than monumental. Many tombs in this area are closed to the public for conservation, and access can be restricted by the Egyptian authorities.
Like other KV-designated sites, KV33 was created during the New Kingdom as a burial cut into the valley rock for a royal or elite individual. Over time the tomb and its contents have suffered from ancient robbery, natural decay, and modern conservation interventions typical for the Theban tombs.
Situated within the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of Luxor, the site is part of the cluster of royal tombs that line the valley opposite the modern city. The valley lies roughly 4-6 kilometers west of Luxor’s city center, in a desert wadi among limestone hills.
How to Get to KV33 #
KV33 is located inside the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank. From Luxor’s city centre take a taxi or join an organized West Bank tour-cross the Nile by ferry or taxi and drive roughly 5-8 km to the Valley of the Kings (about 10-20 minutes). There is no single city-bus number that serves the tombs directly; taxis and tour vehicles are the usual means of access.
Once at the valley entrance expect a walk of several minutes up to around 15-20 minutes along uneven paths from the ticket/visitor area to individual tombs.
Tips for Visiting KV33 #
- Plan to be among the first visitors through the Valley of the Kings entrance so you can visit less-popular tombs with fewer people and cooler temperatures.
- Check the ticket desk on arrival to see which KV numbers are available that day; tomb openings change frequently for conservation and archaeological work.
- Hire an Egyptologist guide at the West Bank ticket area or through a reputable operator - a short explanation in each tomb will reveal historical and iconographic details that are easy to miss on your own.
