The Kutubiyya Mosque is Marrakech’s largest mosque, founded in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty and anchored by a prominent Almohad-era minaret. The minaret is a defining landmark of the city and an important example of Almohad architecture.
The complex is best experienced from the exterior and the surrounding gardens, where the 12th century minaret dominates the skyline and is richly decorated with patterned brickwork and ceramic insets. The mosque includes a large courtyard and is aligned to the qibla for congregational prayer.
The mosque was completed during the Almohad period in the 12th century under rulers of that dynasty and has remained an active place of worship since then, with restorations carried out over the centuries. Its form influenced later minarets across the western Islamic world.
Situated just west of Marrakech’s central medina, the mosque fronts public gardens and is a short walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa and other major sites within the walled city.

- Non-Muslims cannot enter the Kutubiyya Mosque, so use the surrounding gardens (Jardins de la Koutoubia) and nearby streets for unobstructed views and photos of the minaret.
- Visit at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light on the minaret and to avoid midday crowds from Jemaa el-Fnaa; nearby rooftop cafés (e.g., in the medina) also offer excellent framed views.
- Time your visit outside of the main prayer times if you want quieter gardens and walkways-during prayers the area becomes busy with worshippers and passersby.
