Kumana National Park is a protected area on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka in Uva Province, noted for its coastal lagoons, wetlands and rich birdlife. The park is important for both resident and migratory waterbirds and is a recognized birding destination in Sri Lanka.

The landscape combines mangroves, lagoons and adjacent dry-zone forest, and sightings frequently include large waders and waterfowl during the migration season. Visitor access is usually by road from nearby towns and guided birding is a common activity.

Kumana lies along the southeastern fringe of Sri Lanka’s dry zone and is part of the wider network of coastal protected areas that includes Yala and other reserves; the terrain is low-lying and dominated by wetland habitats.

  • Best time to visit: Peak birdwatching and migratory-bird concentrations occur in the dry season, roughly November to April, when coastal lagoons and wetlands host large numbers of waterbirds.
  • Habitat: The park sits on Sri Lanka's southeast coast and contains coastal lagoons and wetlands that are key staging areas for migratory species along the Indian Ocean flyway.

How to Get to Kumana National Park #

Most visitors approach Kumana from the southern side via the Panama entrance; the nearest easy tourist hub is Arugam Bay (about 25-40 km by road, depending on gate). From Batticaloa or Pottuvil, hire a safari jeep or arrange a guide through local tour operators; public buses reach nearby towns but last-mile access into the reserve requires a vehicle with good clearance.

Tips for Visiting Kumana National Park #

  • Book a morning bird-safari between November and March for the highest chance of seeing migratory waders and breeding flocks.
  • Enter via the Kumana or Panama gates-most guided safaris depart from the Panama entrance (closest to Arugam Bay).
  • Combine a safari with a visit to nearby Yala or Lahugala; many wildlife guides operate multi-park circuits.
