Kriváň is a distinctive peak in the High Tatras of northern Slovakia and is widely regarded as a national symbol. The mountain’s summit rises to about 2,495 metres and is a frequent objective for hikers and photographers.

The summit offers panoramic views across the High Tatras and the surrounding valleys; standard hiking routes reach the top on marked trails that require good fitness and mountain hiking experience. Kriváň has featured in Slovak culture and national identity since the 19th century and remains a celebrated landmark.

Early ascents date back centuries with growing popularity for recreational climbing from the 19th century onward; the peak has been included in organized national hikes and cultural events. Trail infrastructure and mountain huts in the broader High Tatras have supported increasingly regular visitor traffic.

Kriváň lies within the High Tatras in the Prešov Region of northern Slovakia, inside Tatra National Park, surrounded by high alpine terrain and glacial valleys.

By car, Poprad is the nearest major hub (roughly 30-40 km to trailhead areas); park at official trailhead lots and follow marked mountain trails.

• Start very early in fine weather (summer months are best) to avoid afternoon storms and the busiest periods; early starts also give clearer views and quieter trails.
• Use the officially marked trails inside Tatra National Park and begin from the nearest established trailhead (public access points such as Štrbské Pleso provide direct approaches), checking local trail conditions beforehand.
