How to Get to Vysoké Tatry#
Vysoké Tatry is well served by Poprad-Tatry Airport and Poprad railway station; the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) and regional buses provide fast, frequent links between resorts. For most visitors the railway + TEŽ combination is the most convenient.
Poprad-Tatry Airport (TAT): The closest airport for Vysoké Tatry (High Tatras), located just outside Poprad. From the airport to mountain resorts (Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica) bus or taxi transfers take 10-40 minutes (taxi ≈€10-25).
Bratislava (BTS) / Košice (KSC): For international arrivals you may also fly into Košice (≈1.5 hrs by train/car) or Bratislava (≈4-5 hrs by car); Košice offers quicker rail/road connections to the Tatras compared with Bratislava.
Train: Poprad-Tatry railway station is the regional rail hub; Slovak Rail (Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko) runs services from Košice, Bratislava and other cities. From Poprad to Štrbské Pleso or Tatranská Lomnica use the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) - short rides typically 15-45 minutes, fares around €1.50-4 per journey.
Bus: Regional buses supplement the TEŽ and connect smaller villages with the resorts; bus timetables vary by season. For long-distance travel, trains to Poprad and then local TEŽ/bus is the standard approach (Poprad→resort ~15-45 min).
How to Get Around Vysoké Tatry#
Use Poprad as the rail/air hub and the Tatra Electric Railway for local movement between resorts. Buses and cars supplement the network for remote trailheads.
- Poprad-Tatry Airport transfers (€2-25) - Short taxis and buses connect the airport with Poprad and the High Tatras resorts. Taxis are quick and reasonably priced for small groups; bus connections are cheaper but check seasonal timetables.
- Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) (€1.50-4) - The TEŽ links major resort centres (Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso). Trains are frequent in high season and are the most convenient way to hop between valleys and trailheads. Buy tickets at stations or via vending machines.
- Regional train (ŽSSK) (€5-20) - Longer-distance trains to Poprad-Tatry connect with Bratislava, Košice and other Slovak cities. Trains are comfortable and a good choice for transfers from Košice or Bratislava; reserve for long-distance or peak travel.
- Bus / Shuttle (€1.50-8) - Regional buses cover the gaps not served by the TEŽ and run to smaller villages. Mountain shuttle buses increase frequency in ski season and during summer holidays; timetables vary by season.
- Car / Rental (€30-80/day (rental)) - Renting a car is useful for accessing trailheads outside the main TEŽ network and for exploring the wider region. Winter driving requires caution and appropriate equipment.
- Walking - Resort centres are compact and many trails start directly from the towns - walking is often the best way to explore close-in sights. Prepare for mountain terrain and variable weather.
