Koobi Fora

Koobi Fora is a paleoanthropological research area on the eastern shores of Lake Turkana in Kenya’s Turkana County, known for extensive fossil beds and long-term scientific excavation. The site contains stratified sediments that have preserved hominin fossils and Pleistocene fauna spanning several million years.

Fieldwork at Koobi Fora, coordinated through research projects and local institutions, has produced important fossil discoveries of early hominins and associated stone tool assemblages. The locality is a reference area for researchers studying human origins in East Africa.
