Edgeøya Island

Edgeøya is an uninhabited island in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway, located to the east of Spitsbergen and separated from it by Storfjorden. The island is part of a large protected area and forms an important habitat for Arctic wildlife.

Terrain on Edgeøya is tundra, coastal plains and ice-covered areas; the island is used seasonally by polar bears, walrus and seabird colonies. There are no permanent settlements and access is by sea or seasonal expeditions from other parts of Svalbard.

The island entered European charts during the era of Arctic exploration in the 17th century and has since been managed under Norwegian jurisdiction with conservation measures. Its inclusion in the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve limits development and emphasizes habitat protection.

Edgeøya sits in the southeastern sector of Svalbard, east of the archipelago’s main island, Spitsbergen, and is accessible only by boat or expedition cruise during the brief Arctic summer.

Landings and travel on Edgeøya are subject to strict polar-bear safety rules and require guided, permitted landings as part of an organised expedition.

• Access Edgeøya only with licensed expedition vessels or polar‑operator landings from Longyearbyen-there are no public transport services and the island is visited almost exclusively on organised Svalbard cruises.
• Visit in high Arctic summer (July-August) when sea ice has retreated and wildlife viewing (walrus, seals, seabird colonies) is possible; plan on expedition schedules rather than fixed daily tours and book well in advance.
• Adhere strictly to Svalbard regulations and polar‑bear safety rules: landings are controlled, guides are required, and visitors should follow environmental guidelines that many casual visitors overlook.
