Koani City
Village on Unguja island in Zanzibar
Coastal villages and seaweed farms frame Koani on southern Unguja: snorkellers and dhow passengers seek coral-fringed reefs, local seafood and glimpses of Swahili life, while mornings often mean small fish markets and boat repairs.
Why Visit Koani?#
On Unguja’s sunlit south coast, Koani draws visitors seeking salty air, Swahili culture and relaxed beach life. Small seafood shacks and spice farms showcase Zanzibar’s flavors-think grilled fish and cloves-while dhow trips offer sunset vistas from the water. Proximity to Jozani Forest for red colobus sightings and nearby coral-fringed beaches makes the village a low-key base for nature and coastal culture.

How to Get to Koani#
Koani on Unguja (Zanzibar) is reached primarily via Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) followed by road travel. There is no rail service on the island; shared minibuses (dala-dalas) and taxis are the usual on-island options.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, Zanzibar (ZNZ): This is the principal airport for Unguja (Zanzibar). From ZNZ you can reach Koani in Unguja South by road: car or taxi rides typically take around 40-70 minutes depending on traffic and exact location, with taxi fares often in the range of TZS 30,000-70,000 (negotiate or confirm a meter/flat rate).
Abeid Amani Karume (domestic connections): Flights to Zanzibar arrive at ZNZ; there are no other major airports on the same island serving regular international flights. If arriving via a mainland port (Dar es Salaam), take the ferry to Stone Town (see bus/ferry below) and proceed overland to Koani.
Train: There is no passenger rail network on Unguja (Zanzibar island), so rail travel is not applicable.
Bus / dala-dala: Dala-dalas (shared minibuses) and local buses run across Unguja connecting Stone Town with southern villages. Fares are very low (typically TZS 300-2,000 depending on distance) but vehicles are basic and schedules informal. From Stone Town or the airport you can catch a dala-dala toward the south and then a short taxi for the final leg to Koani; expect total travel times of around 1-2 hours depending on connections.
How to Get Around Koani#
Zanzibar travellers use ZNZ airport then ground transport to reach Koani. Taxis/private transfers give the fastest and most comfortable door-to-door option; dala-dalas are cheap but slower and less predictable.
- Taxi / private transfer (TZS 30,000-70,000) - Taxis and private transfers from Zanzibar Airport or Stone Town are the most convenient way to reach Koani, especially with luggage. Journey times to southern Unguja villages typically range from 40 minutes to over an hour depending on exact location and traffic. Agree a price in advance-expect roughly TZS 30,000-70,000 for airport-to-village transfers.
- Dala-dala (shared minibus) (TZS 300-2,000) - Dala-dalas are the cheapest local transport and run between Stone Town and many parts of Unguja. They are inexpensive (small TZS fares) but can be crowded and slow, with flexible departure times. Use dala-dalas for budget travel but allow extra time and be ready to transfer to a taxi for the last stretch.
- Car hire (varies (arranged locally)) - Hiring a car (with or without a driver) gives flexibility for exploring Unguja’s beaches and villages around Koani. Road conditions vary-drivers with local experience are recommended for rural routes. Daily hire rates depend on vehicle type and season; book through reputable companies or your accommodation.
- Ferry (to Unguja) (varies) - If arriving from mainland Tanzania, ferries operate between Dar es Salaam and Stone Town (and other ports). Ferry crossings take several hours; once on Unguja you transfer by road to Koani. Check schedules and book in advance during high season.
- Walking - Walking around Koani village itself is straightforward-distances are short and the pace relaxed. For any inter-village travel on Unguja, avoid long walks on main roads because of heat and limited shoulders.
