Kigali Genocide Memorial

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is Rwanda’s principal memorial and educational centre dedicated to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The site incorporates exhibitions that document the events, burial sites for victims and educational programs focused on remembrance and prevention.

Galleries use testimony, documents, photographs and audiovisual material to explain the causes, events and consequences of the genocide and to memorialize victims. The grounds include landscaped memorial spaces and burial areas where visitors can pay respects and learn about commemoration efforts.

Since its establishment the memorial has served as a national and international focal point for education about genocide, reconciliation work and archival research. The institution runs outreach and training programs aimed at genocide prevention and supporting survivors.

The memorial is located in the Gisozi area on the outskirts of Kigali and is easily reachable from the city centre, functioning as both a local burial site and an international site of memory.
