How to Get to Kiffa
Kiffa is reached either by small regional flights into Kiffa Airport or by long overland journeys from Nouakchott and other regional towns. The town is small and most arrivals switch to local taxis or walk into the centre from the airport or bus ranks.
Kiffa Airport (KFA): Kiffa has a small regional airport on the town’s outskirts. Arrival here puts you a short taxi ride from the centre - expect a 5-15 minute drive; fares are typically low but informal (approx. 100-500 MRU / ~US$3-15 depending on bargaining and luggage).
Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC): Nouakchott is Mauritania’s main international gateway. To reach Kiffa you can take a domestic flight (when scheduled) or travel by road; domestic flights to Kiffa are infrequent and timetables change, while the road trip is long (see By Train & Bus card). From NKC into Nouakchott centre taxis cost about 500-1,500 MRU (~US$15-45) and take 20-40 minutes depending on traffic.
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service serving Kiffa. Mauritania’s commercial rail activity is focused on the northern iron-ore line (Zouérat-Nouadhibou) and does not provide passenger connections to Kiffa.
Bus / Shared taxi (bush taxi): The main overland option between Nouakchott and Kiffa is by intercity bus or shared taxi (often called a “bush taxi”). The road journey takes roughly 6-10 hours depending on stops and road conditions; minibuses and shared cars depart from Nouakchott’s bus terminals and central taxi ranks. Fares vary by operator and season - expect several hours of travel and to pay modest fares (confirm current prices locally before travel).
How to Get Around Kiffa
Kiffa is best navigated on foot for short trips and by shared or private taxi for anything beyond the immediate centre. There's no formal public-transport network inside the town; for regional travel use intercity buses or hired vehicles and plan for irregular schedules and rough roads.
- Taxis (shared & private) (100-500 MRU (short trips) approx.) - Shared and private taxis are the most practical way to get around Kiffa and are plentiful at the airport and main streets. Shared taxis are cheaper if you can wait for the vehicle to fill, while private hires are negotiable by distance. Drivers rarely use meters; agree a fare before you start and have small notes handy.
- Intercity buses / Bush taxis (varies - check locally) - For travel between Kiffa and other Mauritanian towns use minibuses or bush taxis. Departures are informal and schedules can be irregular; journeys are long but economical. Bring water, expect stops, and allow plenty of time - services are most reliable when booked via a local operator or the town's bus rank.
- Car hire / 4x4 (daily rates vary; negotiate in town (approx. US$-day, confirm locally)) - Renting a car or hiring a 4x4 with a driver is the best option if you plan to explore rural areas around Kiffa or the wider Assaba region. Roads outside the town can be rough and a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Negotiate insurance and a clear itinerary and prefer drivers with local experience.
- Motorbike / Scooter (informal) (typically low; negotiate on the spot) - Informal motorbike transport may be available but is less common than in denser West African towns. If offered, helmets and clear price agreements are rare - use caution and only accept if the rider and bike look serviceable. Motorbikes can be useful for short hops in town where cars are awkward.
- Walking - Kiffa's centre is compact and easily explored on foot; many markets, shops and guesthouses are within walking distance. Walking is the simplest way to experience daily life, but avoid walking after dark in unfamiliar areas and keep valuables discreet.
