Park Montane rainforest national park protecting endemic wildlife

Kibira National Park is a protected area of montane rainforest in northwestern Burundi, forming the country’s largest continuous forest block.
The park contains steep, forested hills and valleys with evergreen and bamboo-dominated stands; it supports a variety of primates, other mammals and numerous bird species and is important for local water supplies and biodiversity conservation.
The area was set aside for protection in the late 20th century to conserve forest cover and wildlife and to regulate use of the site’s natural resources by neighbouring communities.
Kibira lies inland in the northwestern highlands of Burundi near the border with Rwanda, occupying upland terrain that is broadly west of Bujumbura and part of the region’s central watershed.
- Ecological importance: Contains montane rainforest that provides important watershed protection for surrounding communities and supports a diversity of forest-dependent wildlife.
Tips for Visiting Kibira National Park #
- Arrange an experienced local guide and park permission through a reputable operator based in Bujumbura or Burundi's park authorities-many Kibira trails require a ranger escort and local knowledge of routes.
- Visit in the dry season (roughly May-October) when trails are less muddy and visibility for birds and primates improves; wet season trails can be slippery and some areas hard to reach.
- Focus on guided day hikes from established entry points rather than attempting independent navigation of the dense montane forest-the park's biodiversity and steep terrain make local guidance valuable for both sightings and safety.
Best Time to Visit Kibira National Park #
The best time to visit Kibira National Park is the dry season (June-September) when trails are drier and access is easier.
