On the hill leading up to Pol Pot's grave and Anlong Veng town, a large roadside boulder bears statues carved by Khmer Rouge soldiers.
About the Khmer Rouge Memorial#
The carvings depict a peasant woman and a pair of Khmer Rouge soldiers - the soldiers literally defaced by government troops after the province slipped from the regime’s grip. Nearby, an unadorned concrete structure marks the spot where Pol Pot’s body was cremated in 1998.
This is not a typical tourist attraction, but for travelers drawn to Cambodia’s darkest recent history it is a stark, sobering stop on the way into Anlong Veng, the Khmer Rouge’s last stronghold in the Dangrek Mountains near the Thai border.
Khmer Rouge Memorial: Getting There & Need to Know#
- What it is: Statues carved into a large roadside boulder by Khmer Rouge soldiers when the area was their stronghold, beside Pol Pot’s cremation site.
- Where: Near the bottom of the hill leading into Anlong Veng, Oddar Meanchey Province, close to the Thai border.
- Getting there: Take a taxi or hire a bicycle from Anlong Veng town (25 - 40 minutes). Anlong Veng is reachable from Siem Reap by bus or taxi, a couple of hours south.
- Hours & fees: Accessible day and night; no entry charge.
