Khaosan Road
Stream Busy Bangkok street famed for backpacker nightlife and markets
Bangkok’s Khaosan Road packs budget guesthouses, street-food vendors and busy bars into a single, walkable strip. Backpackers come for pad thai and roadside curries, cheap accommodation, nightlife and easy access to nearby temples and markets.
Khaosan Road is a short street in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district known internationally as a backpacker and budget-travel hub since the late 20th century.
The street and its immediate side lanes contain many budget guesthouses, travel agencies, bars, street-food stalls and small shops selling travel goods; the area is particularly lively at night and is a focal point for low-cost tourism in Bangkok.
Historically the name refers to the rice trade - khao san means milled rice - and the area was a centre of rice commerce before evolving into a tourist district from the 1970s and 1980s onward.
Khaosan Road sits in the Banglamphu neighbourhood of central Bangkok, close to the Chao Phraya River and within easy reach of the Grand Palace and other historic riverside sites.
- Length and busiest time: The street is compact, roughly 400 metres long, and is busiest in the evening when stalls, bars and street food vendors fill the thoroughfare.
- Nearby attractions: Located in the Banglamphu neighbourhood, it is within walking distance of the Chao Phraya River and the Grand Palace, making it a convenient base for visiting central Bangkok sights.
How to Get to Khaosan Road #
Khaosan Road sits in Banglamphu in central Bangkok near the Democracy Monument and the Chao Phraya river. There is no direct BTS/MRT stop; common ways to get there are by taxi from any BTS/MRT station or by riverboat to Phra Arthit (Phra Athat) pier and then a 5-10 minute walk. Tips for Visiting Khaosan Road #
- If you want nightlife and street life, evenings after sunset are busiest; if you prefer a quieter experience and more local colour, stroll Khaosan Road and the adjacent Soi Rambuttri in the early morning when vendors set up and temple life is visible.
- Skip the busiest central strip and explore the parallel lanes (Soi Rambuttri and the small sois off Phra Athit Road) for calmer cafés and traditional food that many tourists miss.
- When planning onward sightseeing, note that the old city (Rattanakosin) and riverfront attractions are a short walk away-use that to combine a quieter daytime visit with an evening on Khaosan.
