Khao Luang is the principal mountain of the Khao Luang massif in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, southern Thailand, and forms the core of Khao Luang National Park. It is the highest terrain in the province and a focal point for the park’s rainforest ecosystems.
Park visitors use a network of trails that lead through lowland and montane rainforest to waterfalls, viewpoints and higher-elevation forest. Short walks and multi-hour hikes are available, and the park is a destination for nature observation and camping at designated sites.
The area was designated for conservation to protect its forest, watersheds and biodiversity and to provide recreation for the province; it has a history of regulated visitor use and park management under Thailand’s national park authority.
Khao Luang sits inland within Nakhon Si Thammarat province, inside the boundaries of Khao Luang National Park. The park lies west of the provincial coastal plain and is accessed by road from Nakhon Si Thammarat city and nearby towns.

How to Get to Khao Luang #
Khao Luang (in Khao Luang National Park) is in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. The usual access point is from Nakhon Si Thammarat town (the provincial capital); from there drive inland on the provincial roads toward the national park. The park headquarters and trailheads are reached by car or local minibus/songthaew services from town - the drive into the park is typically on provincial roads and takes on the order of tens of kilometres.
Once at the park entrance you proceed on foot along marked trails to reach viewpoints and the forested slopes of Khao Luang.
Tips for Visiting Khao Luang #
- Set out early in the morning for clearer summit views and cooler hiking conditions; the usual trailheads start from the Khao Luang National Park headquarters near Nakhon Si Thammarat town.
- Combine a summit attempt with visits to the park's lower trails and waterfalls - the shaded lower tracks are often quieter and show a different side of the park that many summit-focused visitors miss.
- Avoid the monsoon months (heavy rains and slippery trails); aim for the dry season (roughly November-February) for the most reliable trail conditions and viewpoints.
