Khan el-Khalili

Khan el-Khalili is a historic market quarter in the heart of Islamic Cairo, noted as one of the city’s principal traditional souks. It functions as a long-standing commercial and social hub within Cairo’s old city.

Shops and narrow alleyways contain a wide range of goods from metalwork and jewellery to spices and textiles, with many small workshops and storefronts clustered along pedestrian lanes. Hundreds of stalls and shops line the area, and there are cafés and stalls selling traditional foods and souvenirs.

The market developed as part of Cairo’s medieval urban fabric and expanded over centuries under successive local rulers, becoming the commercial heart of the eastern quarter of historic Cairo. Its layout and function reflect continuous use as a bazaar and meeting place through the Ottoman and modern periods.

Situated in the historic Islamic district of Cairo, the bazaar sits close to major religious and urban landmarks and is easily reached from central Cairo by road or metro. The area is dense urban fabric of narrow streets and adjacent mosques and madrasas.

• Best time to visit: Early morning weekday visits are noticeably quieter than late afternoon and evenings when the bazaar is busiest.
