Kerma culture
Archaeological Site Ancient Nubian civilization centered at Kerma archaeological sites
The Kerma culture of Upper Nubia (modern Northern State, Sudan) built large mud-brick towns, tumuli and distinctive pottery; archaeologically minded visitors study burial mounds and museum collections.
The Kerma culture refers to an ancient Nubian kingdom and archaeological culture centered around the site of Kerma in present-day Northern State, Sudan, flourishing roughly from the third to the second millennium BCE. It served as a major political and cultural centre in Upper Nile/Nubia prior to the rise of the New Kingdom of Egypt in the region.
Key material remains at the Kerma site include large mud-brick temple-structures (deffufas), extensive tumulus burial fields for elite interments, and the remains of a sizeable urban settlement with evidence of craft production and trade. These features together indicate a complex, organized polity with long-distance contacts.
The cultural horizon associated with Kerma saw building, burial and urban activity across centuries and was later incorporated into and influenced by successive Nubian and Egyptian states. Excavations and surveys have documented monumental architecture and large cemetery complexes at the main site next to the Nile floodplain.
Kerma lies in Northern Sudan on the Nile’s eastern bank, within the region historically called Nubia, and the archaeological remains occupy a broad area on the river plain visible from surrounding lowlands.
- Chronological importance: Earliest urban kingdom in Nubia, flourishing during the third and second millennia BCE and interacting with contemporary Egypt.
- Visible tumuli: Some burial mounds at the site reach substantial heights and are among the largest prehistoric tumuli in the region, visible across the plain.
