Kediet ej Jill is an iron-ore massif in the Tiris Zemmour region of northern Mauritania and is the country’s highest point at roughly 915 metres above sea level.
The site is primarily an industrial landscape dominated by iron ore extraction and associated infrastructure; large ore deposits have been worked for decades and the area is characterised by open-pit and surface mining together with rail links to the coast.
Commercial mining intensified in the mid 20th century and has been the central economic activity around the nearby town of Zouérat. The geology of the massif is iron-rich and the mountain functions as the focal point for Mauritania’s major iron mining operations.
Geographically the massif overlooks the town of Zouérat in northern Mauritania and lies within the Sahara’s arid plateaus, forming a locally prominent landmark in a generally flat region.

How to Get to Kediet ej Jill #
Kediet ej Jill (the iron‑ore hill) is adjacent to the mining town of Zouérat in northern Mauritania. The usual way to reach the site is from Zouérat by taxi or local vehicle on mining and local roads within a few kilometres of the town; the Mauritania Railway serves Zouérat for ore transport (passenger travel on the line is limited). There are no widely advertised public bus numbers for direct tourist access-arrange local transport in Zouérat.

- Kediet ej Jill lies in the SNIM mining district near Zouérat, and much of the mountain and surrounding terrain are on or adjacent to industrial concessions-contact local authorities or SNIM in Zouérat before planning a visit to confirm access and safety.
- Expect rough, unpaved desert tracks and require a high‑clearance 4x4; arrange transport and an experienced local driver/guide in Zouérat rather than attempting to reach the site independently.
- Plan visits during the cooler months and early morning (or late afternoon) to avoid extreme daytime heat, and be prepared for no visitor infrastructure-permits and guidance are essential if you intend to approach former mine workings.
