Kasungu Travel Guide
City City in Central Region, Malawi.
Kasungu’s claim on tourist maps is its national park: open savannahs for game drives, large tusked elephants, birding, and the slow rhythms of rural market towns and tobacco farms nearby.
Why Visit Kasungu? #
Central Malawi’s Kasungu draws nature and culture travelers with Kasungu National Park, sweeping miombo woodlands where elephant and antelope roam, and lively market life tied to tobacco farms. Visitors come for Chewa cultural heritage-watching Gule Wamkulu masquerades at festivals-and for quiet rural hospitality. The town provides a low-key base for safaris and cultural exchanges that contrast Malawi’s busier lake resorts.

How to Get to Kasungu
Kasungu is reached overland from Lilongwe (Kamuzu International Airport) - there are no commercial flights into Kasungu itself. Most visitors fly into Lilongwe and continue by bus, minibus or private taxi to Kasungu. Road travel is straightforward but expect basic facilities on local services.
Kamuzu International Airport (LLW): Kamuzu International in Lilongwe is the main gateway for central Malawi. From the airport you can take a metered taxi or pre-booked transfer to Kasungu: journey time ~1.5-2 hours by road. Taxis to Kasungu are commonly negotiated and typically cost in the region of 35,000-60,000 MWK (roughly $30-$55) depending on vehicle and luggage.
Chileka International Airport (BLZ): Chileka (near Blantyre) is farther south and used mainly by travellers coming from the south. If arriving here you can take an internal flight to Lilongwe (limited) or travel overland: buses and shared minibuses (matola/dala-dala) run between Blantyre and Lilongwe; add a Lilongwe-Kasungu minibus connection. Expect full travel time 6-8+ hours door-to-door and variable cumulative fares (minibuses are the cheapest option).
Train: Malawi has very limited passenger rail links for central Malawi; there is no reliable passenger rail service directly serving Kasungu. Rail is not a practical option for most travellers to Kasungu.
Bus / Minibus: Intercity minibuses (often called minibuses, matola or dala-dala) are the common, reliable option. Minibuses run from Lilongwe central bus station to Kasungu and take about 1.5-2 hours; fares are low (typically a few hundred to a few thousand MWK depending on vehicle and seat class). For schedules, arrive at Lilongwe bus station and ask local operators. Private coaches and charter taxis are available for faster, more comfortable transfers at higher cost.
