Shrine Shinto shrine in Nara famous for lanterns
In Nara, Kasuga‑taisha shrine displays hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns, vermilion wooden halls and nearby deer-filled park; visitors come for temple architecture, lantern festivals and shrine walks.
Kasuga-taisha is a major Shinto shrine in Nara, Japan, founded in 768 CE and strongly associated with the Fujiwara family. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.
The shrine complex contains multiple main and subsidiary halls, a long approach lined with stone and bronze lanterns, and a sacred grove retained as a protected forest. Tens of thousands of annual visitors come to see the lanterns, traditional architecture and ritual ceremonies.
Kasuga-taisha’s architecture exemplifies Shinto shrine construction and preservation practices, with periodic rebuilding and careful maintenance of wooden structures. The shrine has retained its ritual functions since the Nara period and continues to host seasonal festivals.
The shrine sits within Nara Park on the eastern side of central Nara city, adjacent to deer-populated parkland and within walking distance of other UNESCO sites such as Tōdai-ji. Access is by short walks from Nara’s central transport hubs.

Tips for Visiting Kasuga-taisha #
- Aim to arrive at Kasuga-taisha early in the morning before tour buses from Nara and Kyoto arrive - the approach through Nara Park along the lantern-lined paths is far quieter then.
- Don't miss the small Kasuga Taisha Treasure Hall (museum) beside the shrine; it displays ritual objects and explains the shrine's history that many visitors overlook while focusing on the main buildings.
- If you can, time your visit to coincide with one of the shrine's lantern festivals when the bronze and stone lanterns are lit - those events give a very different impression of the site (check dates in advance).
