Kasbah Mosque, Marrakesh

The Kasbah Mosque is a large Almohad-era mosque in the Kasbah quarter of Marrakesh, founded in the 12th century. It serves as the main Friday mosque for the historic royal district.

The mosque is noted for its monumental exterior minaret and compact courtyard surrounded by a hypostyle prayer hall with horseshoe arches and traditional Moroccan decorative motifs. Because access to the interior is typically restricted to Muslims, most visitors view and photograph the stone and brick façades, the minaret, and the mosque precinct from adjacent streets.

The mosque was established by the Almohad dynasty in the late 12th century to serve the royal kasbah that housed the palace and administration. It has been repaired and altered across later periods but retains its Almohad plan and major architectural features.

It stands in the Kasbah district of Marrakesh, immediately beside the royal palace complex (Dar al-Makhzen) in the southern part of the old medina, within the Marrakesh-Safi region.
