Expect to travel by road using shared minibuses, private taxis or local buses; routes and times can be unpredictable so plan extra time and confirm arrangements locally.
- Taxi-brousse / shared minibus (Variable / negotiated) - Shared minibuses and bush taxis are the most common affordable option for intercity travel. They depart from main bus stages and run when full; services can be informal so ask locally about schedules and prices.
- Private taxi / car hire (USD 30-100+ (depending on distance)) - Hiring a private car or taxi gives flexibility and more reliable timing, especially for remote destinations; expect significantly higher cost than shared transport. Drivers often double as informal guides who know local road conditions.
- Local buses (Low / locally variable) - Local buses run on main corridors but services are often infrequent and subject to road and weather conditions. Expect slower journeys and basic vehicles.
- Motorbike taxi (pousse) (Very low / locally negotiated) - Motorbike taxis are commonly used for short local trips where roads are narrow or traffic is heavy; they are fast but less comfortable and less safe for long distances.
- Car (self-drive) (€40-€100+/day) - Self-driving is rarely recommended for visitors due to road conditions, signage and security; using a local driver is safer and more practical.
- Walking - Within villages and small towns walking is the primary way to get around; distances are short and local amenities are often reached on foot.
