Karnak
Temple Vast ancient Egyptian temple complex near Luxor
Near Luxor, Karnak is a sprawling temple complex centred on the Great Hypostyle Hall with rows of sandstone columns and obelisks; visitors explore carved reliefs, the avenue of sphinxes and evening sound‑and‑light shows.
Karnak is an extensive ancient temple complex on the east bank of the Nile at modern Luxor in Upper Egypt and is one of the largest religious sites in the world. The complex grew over more than a millennium, primarily during the New Kingdom, and centers on the worship of the god Amun-Ra.
The Precinct of Amun-Ra, the Great Hypostyle Hall with 134 columns (some reaching about 24 meters), the Sacred Lake, and the long Avenue of Sphinxes that once linked Karnak to Luxor Temple. The complex covers a large area of temples, chapels, pylons, and administrative buildings, with extensive carved reliefs and inscriptions.
Construction and expansion at Karnak took place over many reigns, including major works by pharaohs such as Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Seti I, and Ramesses II. The site continued to be used and modified into the Late Period and was later recorded and conserved by modern Egyptologists.
Karnak sits on the Nile floodplain at Luxor (ancient Thebes) and lies immediately north of the modern city, making it accessible as a principal archaeological stop on the East Bank.
- Complex layout: Karnak is a temple complex rather than a single structure; allow time to walk between precincts and see inscriptions and reliefs up close.

- Great Hypostyle Hall: A monumental hypostyle hall built mainly under Seti I and Ramesses II, featuring 134 columns several of which reach about 24 meters in height and are densely inscribed.
- Avenue of Sphinxes: A paved avenue that historically connected Karnak and Luxor temples and is lined with sphinx statues for a length of roughly 2.7 kilometers in total between the sites.
- Sacred Lake: A small artificial pool used in ancient ritual practice located within the temple precincts and still visible to visitors.

Tips for Visiting Karnak #
- Arrive at opening or late afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat and bus groups; the Hypostyle Hall is far easier to appreciate with fewer people and softer light.
- Hire a licensed local guide at the entrance to orient you around the sprawling complex and explain the key precincts (Amun-Ra precinct, Hypostyle Hall) - a guide will help you spot inscription panels and smaller, easily-missed reliefs.
- Don't skip the Sacred Lake and the smaller outdoor artifacts around the temple complex; many visitors only see the main hall and miss these quieter areas that give context to the site.
