How to Get to Karima, Sudan

Karima (near Jebel Barkal) is in Sudan's Northern State; international visitors normally arrive via Khartoum and continue by domestic flight (when available) or by long road transfer to Merowe/Shendi and then by road to Karima. Services and schedules in Sudan can change, so confirm current options before travel.

By Air

Khartoum International Airport (KRT): The main international gateway to Sudan is Khartoum International Airport. If you’re travelling to Karima (Northern State) you will need onward domestic travel from Khartoum - either by domestic flight to a nearer airport (see below) or by road. Flight schedules and availability to regional airports vary; check Sudanese carriers for current routes and fares.

Merowe Airport (MWE) / Nearby airfields: Merowe (also spelled Merowe/Meroe) has an airport that serves domestic flights from Khartoum when scheduled services operate. Merowe is the closest airport for visiting Jebel Barkal and Karima - from Merowe it’s typically a road transfer of under 1-1.5 hours to reach Karima. Domestic flight prices and timetables vary and should be confirmed with airlines.

By Train & Bus

Train: Sudan’s rail network is limited in reliable passenger service for tourist travel to Northern State; rail is not a practical or dependable option for reaching Karima from Khartoum.

Bus / Road: Road travel is the common option: long-distance buses or private 4x4/coach transfers depart Khartoum for northern destinations (Merowe, Shendi, Karima). Road journeys can take many hours (often 6-12+ hours from Khartoum depending on stop patterns and road conditions); prices depend on operator and vehicle type. For safety and schedule reasons, many travellers use organized tours or private transfers when visiting Karima and Jebel Barkal.
