Archaeological Site Open-air Neo-Hittite archaeological site with inscriptions
Open-air Neo-Hittite site in Osmaniye Province with carved reliefs, bilingual inscriptions and fortress ruins; visitors study iron-age sculpture and the small onsite museum.
Karatepe is an open-air archaeological site and museum near the town of Kadirli in Osmaniye Province, southern Turkey, containing a Late Hittite fortress dating to the 8th century BCE.
The site displays carved stone reliefs, monumental gateways and large lion sculptures. Key highlights are the carved bilingual inscription panels in Phoenician and Hieroglyphic Luwian and the well-preserved defensive masonry and reliefs visible across the site.
Excavations at Karatepe revealed a fortified settlement with monumental gates and relief-decorated walls; the site was first systematically excavated in the 20th century and many finds are displayed in the on-site museum and at regional museums. The bilingual inscriptions recovered here provided critical evidence for reading Hieroglyphic Luwian.
Karatepe sits inland in southern Turkey’s Cilician plain region, on a hillside near the Ceyhan river basin and close to the town of Kadirli in Osmaniye Province.
- Inscriptions: The site preserves stone reliefs and carved stelae in Phoenician and Hieroglyphic Luwian; these bilingual texts were instrumental in understanding Hieroglyphic Luwian.
- Visiting tips: Best visited in spring or autumn when temperatures are milder; outdoor paths can be exposed to sun during summer.
