Anazarbus Ruins

Anazarbus is an archaeological site in Adana Province, Turkey, containing the remains of a city and citadel that was important in ancient Cilicia. Substantial defensive walls, a large citadel tower and Roman-era urban structures are preserved on the hilltop site.

The visible remains include fortification works and parts of civic buildings such as a theatre, indicating the city’s role as a regional centre in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times. The site has been the focus of archaeological study and occasional conservation interventions.

Anazarbus occupies a strategic position on a hill above the surrounding plain in Adana Province and is accessed from nearby roads that connect the provincial settlements. The ruins provide an overview of successive occupation phases across antiquity and the early medieval period.

• Expect a rural site with limited public-transport options-reach the ruins most reliably by car from Kozan/Adana and leave extra time for the drive and parking.
• Take time to walk the fortress mound and surrounding ruins rather than just viewing from the road; the elevated sections give the best views over the plain and reveal spread-out archaeological features that many visitors overlook.
