History & Culture of Kamping Poy#

Ang Kam Ping Puoy, sometimes called Morning Glory Lake, is not a natural lake but a reservoir built by forced labour during the Khmer Rouge era, when more than 10,000 workers are believed to have died during its construction. In the decades since, local residents have reclaimed it as a popular weekend picnic spot and swimming hole, with open-sided shelters set beside the water and vendors selling all manner of food and drink.

A gentle boat trip around the lake is a pleasant way to pass the time, and boatmen wait to take visitors out for a negotiable fee. The nearby hilltop temple of Wat Phnom Sampeau can be combined with Kamping Poy on a day trip from Battambang.
