Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park
Historical Site Archaeological park preserving medieval Thai temples and walls
A protected archaeological zone in central Thailand, Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park preserves 12th-14th century Khmer and Sukhothai-style temples, moats and city walls; visitors walk temple platforms, photograph brick prangs and visit the on-site museum.
Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park preserves the archaeological remains of the historical town of Kamphaeng Phet in central Thailand, with temple complexes and defensive works dating mainly to the 13th-14th centuries.
The park is organized into distinct groups by the Ping River, including walled city areas and riverside temple clusters; it contains brick and laterite walls, moats, chedis, and galleries of Buddha images spread across several ruin clusters. Many structures retain standing elements and carved details that illustrate Sukhothai-period urban planning and temple design.
Kamphaeng Phet developed as an important administrative and defensive town in the Sukhothai and later Ayutthaya periods; the surviving ruins reflect its role as a strategic river town with fortifications and religious sites. Over time the site fell out of continuous urban use and became an archaeological preserve, now managed for conservation and study.
The park lies on both banks of the Ping River in Kamphaeng Phet province in north-central Thailand, within the cluster of historic towns associated with the Sukhothai kingdom and reachable by road from regional centers.
- UNESCO designation: The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation that also includes Sukhothai and associated historic towns, recognized for its well-preserved city plan and temple architecture.
- Photography tip: Best light for photography is typically in the late afternoon when the low sun emphasizes brick and laterite textures on the temple remains.
What to See #
- Mueang Chakangrao: Mueang Chakangrao is the main walled city area on the east bank of the Ping River, containing central temple ruins and the remnants of the old city wall and moat.
- Mueang Nakhon Chum: Mueang Nakhon Chum is a separate group on the west bank with a riverfront cluster of standing Buddha images and several restored temple platforms and chedis.
