Kamaran
Island Red Sea island off Yemen with rugged coastline
Off Yemen’s Red Sea coast, Kamaran is a rugged island with small fishing settlements and steep shores; it sees few visitors, mostly local fishers and occasional boaters.
Kamaran (Jazirat Kamaran) is an island in the Red Sea off the coast of western Yemen, administratively part of Al-Hudaydah Governorate. It is one of Yemen’s larger offshore islands and has a history of settlement, trade and strategic use.
The island’s coastline features cliffs and rocky shores with a number of ruined buildings and fortifications reflecting periods of Ottoman and later administration. It has been sparsely populated in recent decades and lacks major modern tourist infrastructure.
Historically Kamaran has been used as a coastal outpost and for maritime activities linked to the Red Sea and Arabian trade routes; its use and population have varied over time according to political control and local economy. Contemporary access can be limited by regional security and administrative arrangements.
Geographically the island lies off the Tihama coast of Yemen in the southern Red Sea, opposite the Yemeni mainland near the Al Hudaydah coastal region.
- Historic remains: Contains ruins and historical structures from Ottoman and later periods scattered around the island's coast.
Tips for Visiting Kamaran #
- Check your government travel advisories and consular guidance before planning - Yemen's security situation has made travel to Kamaran and much of the country highly restricted.
- If travel becomes possible, be prepared for minimal tourist infrastructure: access has historically been by local boat from Al Hudaydah, services are sparse, and arrangements typically need local contacts or chartered transport rather than scheduled tourist services.
