Kalka–Shimla Railway
Museum Historic mountain railway in Himachal Pradesh, UNESCO-listed
The Kalka-Shimla Railway winds over narrow-gauge tracks from Kalka into Himachal Pradesh, with colonial-era stations, tunnels and viaducts. Travelers ride for mountain panoramas and UNESCO-listed engineering heritage.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain railway running from Kalka to Shimla, completed in 1903 to provide rail access to the British-era hill station of Shimla. The line is about 96 kilometres long and was engineered to negotiate steep terrain with numerous tunnels, bridges and loops.
The railway is prized for its mountain scenery and the sequence of civil-engineering structures along the route, including over 100 tunnels and hundreds of bridges and viaducts. It operates mainly as a passenger service and is used by tourists as well as local travellers.
Built and operated during the British colonial period to serve Shimla as the summer administrative centre, the line has continued in regular use and has been preserved as an example of colonial mountain railway engineering. It is recognised internationally as part of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage serial site.
The route runs from Kalka (on the plains) up into the Himalaya foothills to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, climbing to an alpine terminus above 2,000 metres and passing dozens of small stations and hilltowns along the way.
- Length, gauge and opening date: The line is approximately 96 kilometres long, built on 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge and opened in 1903 as an imperial-era mountain railway.
- Engineering features: Contains 102 tunnels and more than 800 bridges and viaducts along its route, features that illustrate the engineering required to climb into the foothills of the Himalaya.
What to See #
- Kalka terminus: Kalka station is the plainland terminus where the line connects with broad-gauge mainline services; it is the traditional rail gateway to the mountain section.
- Shimla terminus: Shimla station is the mountain terminus at the hill station town, situated at roughly 2,200 metres above sea level and serving as the line's principal alpine arrival point.

To ride the heritage line, travel to Kalka (by train or taxi) and board the Kalka-Shimla narrow‑gauge service there.
Tips for Visiting Kalka–Shimla Railway #
- Start the journey at Kalka to experience the full UNESCO route to Shimla and allow the full 4-6 hour timetable to enjoy the scenery at leisure.
- Book reserved seats well in advance, especially during peak seasons and weekends, since the heritage trains have limited capacity.
- Take a daytime service for clear views of gorges, tunnels and viaducts; many visitors miss the engineering highlights by travelling at night or on crowded local services.
- Plan stops at smaller stations such as Barog to stretch and see notable tunnels and viewpoints that most through-passengers dont explore.
