How to Get to Kalabaka#
Kalabaka (gateway to Meteora) is best reached via Athens or Thessaloniki airports, then onward by train or KTEL bus to Kalambaka station. Trains from Larissa are convenient; buses from Athens depart regularly for direct service.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH): Kalabaka (Kalambaka) is most commonly reached from ATH. From the airport, you can take the suburban train or bus to Athens central stations (Athens Railway Station / Larissa Station or Kifissos Bus Station) and then a train or KTEL bus to Kalabaka; total travel time typically ranges 4.5-6.5 hours depending on connections.
Thessaloniki Airport (SKG): Thessaloniki is another option, especially if combining with northern Greece. From SKG, travel to Thessaloniki central bus or rail station and change for a bus or train to Kalabaka; travel times are usually 3.5-5 hours overall.
Train: Kalambaka has a railway station named Kalambaka on the Thessaloniki-Athens (via Larissa) corridor, served by Hellenic Train (formerly TrainOSE). Direct trains from Larissa to Kalambaka take around 1 hour; from Athens the rail journey via Larissa is roughly 4-5 hours depending on service.
Bus: KTEL Trikala operates buses to Kalambaka from Athens (Kifissos/Kifisou Bus Station) and from surrounding towns such as Trikala. Buses are frequent enough for most schedules and can be faster or more direct than some train options depending on the day.
