Kabah (Maya site)
Archaeological Site Preclassic Maya city with carved stone architecture
Maya archaeological site in Yucatán near Uxmal, noted for Puuc-style stone façades and carved masks; visitors explore terraces, plazas and ornate stone reliefs.
Kabah is a Maya archaeological site in the Puuc hills of Yucatán, Mexico, noted for its dense Puuc-style stone decoration and prominent carved masks of the rain deity Chaac. It is part of the Puuc group of Late Classic and Terminal Classic Maya settlements.
The site’s best-known feature is a long, richly carved palace facade decorated with repeated Chaac masks and other veneer sculpture, often called the “Palace of the Masks.” Visitors also find vaulted rooms, stone friezes and multiple palace-like complexes typical of Puuc architecture.
Kabah was occupied and developed in the Classic period by Maya elites following the Puuc regional building tradition; its architecture reflects the skilled stone veneer and sculptural programs of that tradition. Over time the site was abandoned like many Classic Maya centres and preserved as a ruin.
Kabah lies in the Puuc archaeological region of southern Yucatán, close to other Puuc sites such as Uxmal and Sayil and is commonly visited from Mérida or the highway that links the Puuc circuit.
- Combination visits: Often visited together with nearby Puuc sites such as Uxmal and Sayil as part of the Puuc archaeological route in Yucatán; combines well with a single-day circuit.
- Viewing tip: The facade covered with Chaac masks is best appreciated in daylight when shadows define the carved stone masks and iconography.
