Xtampak Archaeological Site

Xtampak is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the state of Campeche, Mexico, notable for Puuc-style architecture and a substantial palace complex. The site contains masonry constructions with vaulted interiors and decorated facades typical of the Puuc region.

Key on-site features include an extended palace with multiple rooms and galleries and civic spaces such as plazas and ceremonial structures. The vaulted masonry and elaborate stone decoration are reasons researchers and visitors study and visit the site.

Archaeological investigations date the principal occupation to the Classic period, when the Puuc architectural tradition was prominent in this part of the Maya lowlands. The site was a regional centre rather than a capital on the scale of the largest Maya cities.

Xtampak is located inland in southern Campeche, within the Puuc-influenced part of the Yucatán Peninsula and accessed by road from regional towns.
