Joya de Cerén
Ruins Pre-Columbian Maya village preserved under volcanic ash
Joya de Cerén preserves a Maya farming village buried by volcanic ash, with reconstructed houses and household artifacts; visitors study everyday pre-Columbian rural life and agricultural practices.
Joya de Cerén is a pre-Columbian Maya farming village in western El Salvador that was suddenly buried by volcanic ash in the early centuries of the first millennium CE. The ash sealed houses and communal areas, preserving a snapshot of daily life.
Excavated domestic compounds reveal preserved floors, hearths, storage pits and household artifacts that give unusually direct evidence of domestic architecture, food preparation, and craft activities. The layout includes multiple small houses and communal structures clustered around open spaces.
The site’s preservation allows study of farming practices, storage, and seasonal life, with visible ash layers and reconstructed roofs used to protect fragile remains. On-site interpretation explains the eruption context and the village’s layout.
The village was occupied by farming communities of the Maya cultural sphere and was buried by a volcanic eruption in about the early part of the first millennium CE, which preserved its structures and assemblage. Archaeological work since its discovery has focused on excavation and conservation of fragile organic and architectural remains.
Joya de Cerén lies in La Libertad Department, approximately 20-25 km northwest of San Salvador, on a volcanic plain that has produced multiple eruptions over time. The setting is agricultural and relatively flat, with nearby volcanic landforms.
- Exceptional preservation: Buried and preserved under volcanic ash, the site offers rare in situ preservation of household architecture and organic remains, prompting the nickname "the Pompeii of the Americas."
- World Heritage status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its intact evidence of pre-Columbian village life and agricultural practices.
