Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, located in central Seoul. It functions as the administrative and ceremonial center for the order and is a prominent urban temple.

The temple complex includes the main worship hall, a courtyard often filled with colorful lanterns during Buddhist holidays, and smaller shrines and halls used for meditation and community events. The site is commonly visited by worshippers and tourists for prayer, cultural observation and seasonal festivals.

Originally established in the early 20th century and rebuilt and expanded over time, the temple complex developed into the principal center for the Jogye Order and contemporary Korean Zen practice. It has undergone restorations that reflect changing urban and religious needs.

Situated in central Seoul near the Insadong district and Jongno, the temple is within easy walking distance of several museums, cultural streets and public transport stops.

• Daeungjeon (Main Hall): Primary worship hall that faces the temple courtyard and houses the main Buddha image and ceremonial space used for daily services and festivals.

Jogyesa Temple is in central Seoul near the Insadong and Jongno areas. Nearest subway: Jongno 3-ga Station (Lines 1, 3, 5) or Anguk Station (Line 3), with a short walk to the temple.

• Visit during early morning chanting (around 5:30-6:30am) for the clearest sense of monastic rhythm and a quieter temple environment.
• Respect temple etiquette (bowing at the halls, removing shoes where required) and note photography restrictions in inner halls.
• Try a temple-managed tea stall - Jogyesa's grounds house vendors who serve traditional tea during festivals.
