Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes
Nature Reserve Volcanic island with lava tubes and volcanic landscapes
Volcanic cones, lava tubes and Hallasan’s trails draw hikers and geology fans to Jeju; visitors explore Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone, Manjanggul lava tube, coastal beaches and seafood markets.
Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes is a volcanic island off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula characterized by a shield volcano, extensive lava tube systems and distinctive coastal volcanic features. The island’s geology records volcanic activity from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene and includes landforms of regional and global volcanic significance.
The site contains multiple major volcanic features. Hallasan rises to 1,950 metres and is the highest point on the island; its slopes contain a range of vegetation zones and a crater near the summit. The Geomunoreum system comprises numerous lava tubes and caves formed by past eruptions; the Manjanggul Lava Tube is one of the world’s longest known lava tubes at about 13.4 kilometres, with an accessible show cave section for visitors. The coastal landscape includes tuff cones and sea cliffs such as Seongsan Ilchulbong, formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions.
Visitors can explore accessible sections of lava tubes, mountain trails and coastal viewpoints that illustrate different volcanic processes and landforms. Trails and designated viewing areas highlight changes in vegetation with altitude and reveal the distribution of lava flow and pyroclastic deposits across the island.
Jeju Island sits in the Korea Strait off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula, administratively Jeju Province. The island’s terrain is dominated by Hallasan in the centre, with coastal plains and cliffs around the perimeter; the nearest major mainland city is Busan, several hundred kilometres to the northeast by sea and air links.
- Access restrictions: A number of caves in the lava tube system are only partially accessible to the public; check local access rules and guided-tour availability before visiting.
- Weather note: Hallasan's altitude is 1,950 metres, making summit weather variable - dress for mountain conditions even when the island coast is warm.
What to See #
- Hallasan Mountain: A volcanic shield that rises to 1,950 metres above sea level and dominates the island; it hosts alpine vegetation and a crater lake near the summit.
- Geomunoreum lava tube system: A system of lava tubes and caves formed by successive lava flows, including the Manjanggul Lava Tube which is one of the longest known lava tubes in the world at about 13.4 kilometres in length.
- Seongsan Ilchulbong: A tuff cone on the eastern coast formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions, noted for its near-circular crater and coastal cliffs that are visible from sea level.
How to Get to Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes #
Fly to Jeju International Airport (CJU) - the main gateway for Jeju Island with frequent flights from Seoul, Busan and other Korean cities. The components of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes are spread across the island, so the easiest way to visit multiple sites (Manjanggul Lava Tube, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Hallasan, etc.) is by rental car; from Jeju City (airport area) drives to individual sites typically take on the order of tens of minutes to an hour depending on which site you are visiting. Intercity and local buses run between Jeju City and Seogwipo and serve many attractions, but services are slower and sites are often a short walk from the nearest bus stop or require a taxi for the final leg.
Tips for Visiting Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes #
- Visit the show caves (especially Manjanggul) first thing after opening-they're cooler inside and far less crowded in the morning; the Manjanggul visitor centre/parking is the main access point for the 1 km walkable section.
- Combine a sunrise visit to Seongsan Ilchulbong (east coast) with a counterclockwise drive around the island to reach quieter lava-tube entrances and lesser-known caves like Gimnyeonggul later in the day.
- Check site-specific opening schedules before you go: only portions of some lava tubes are open to the public, and timings change seasonally, so confirm at the Jeju UNESCO visitor information to avoid arriving when a section is closed.
