Udo (Jeju Province) Island

Udo is a small island off the east coast of Jeju Island in South Korea, administratively part of Jeju Province. The island covers roughly 6.2 square kilometres and is formed from volcanic activity associated with Jeju’s geology.

Visitors reach Udo by a short ferry from Seongsan Port and commonly circle the island by bicycle, scooter or tour bus to visit beaches, coastal cliffs and local cafes. The island’s modest peak provides panoramic views across the East Sea and toward Jeju’s eastern shore.

Udo developed as a small fishing and farming community with local traditions tied to the sea and volcanic soils; tourism expanded in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with regular ferry connections from Jeju.

Udo lies off the northeast tip of Jeju Island, about a few kilometres from Seongsan on Jeju’s coast, and is one of the islets most frequently visited on day trips from Jeju city or Seongsan.

What to See#

• Seobin / Udo Peak: Seobin Peak (often called Udobong) is the island’s highest point, offering panoramic views of Jeju and the East China Sea from a summit a little over 100 metres high.

Udo is reached by frequent ferries from Seongsan Port on Jeju Island. Ferries take about 15 minutes; check local timetables for seasonal schedules.

• Take the short ferry or boat from Jeju's eastern coast and time it to avoid high winds-sea conditions can be rough.
• Walk the island's coastal paths for perspectives on the sea stacks and birdlife; binoculars are useful for spotting seabirds.
• Respect local fishing activities; some landing spots are used by fishermen and can be slippery.
