Jebel Barkal

Jebel Barkal is a prominent sandstone ridge and archaeological complex in northern Sudan near the town of Karima, noted for its towering rock spur and ancient temple remains. It was a major religious center for the Kingdom of Kush and is archaeologically important for Nubian history.

Key features include the conspicuous rock formation and the remains of temples at its base, which were focal points for ritual activity and royal ceremonies. The site draws interest for its temples, reliefs and proximity to royal cemeteries used by Kushite rulers.

The ridge and its temples were used and modified over many centuries by the Kushite state and later cultures; it served as a dynastic and religious center during Napatan times and retained symbolic importance under successive rulers. Archaeological work has documented temples, inscriptions and funerary structures linked to Kushite kings.

Jebel Barkal sits close to the Nile in Sudan’s Northern State, a short distance from the modern town of Karima. The site overlooks the surrounding desert plain and is part of a cluster of Napatan-period monuments in the region.
